How our hotel reinvigorated stone sculpture

December 4th 2024

At Grand Hotel Amrâth Amsterdam, we proudly carry a piece of history. Our hotel is housed in the monumental Scheepvaarthuis, an icon of the Amsterdam School and a symbol of craftsmanship, art, and maritime heritage. But it’s not just the architecture that makes this building so special. The Scheepvaarthuis also gave new momentum to Dutch stone sculpture, thanks in part to the visionary artist Hendrik Albertus van den Eijnde.

Van den Eijnde, a true master of his craft, designed the magnificent sculpture group The Four Oceans, which today welcomes our guests at the main entrance. The Mediterranean Sea, Indian Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, and Pacific Ocean are powerfully depicted in stone, paying tribute to Amsterdam’s rich maritime history. These sculptures are just a few of the many artworks that give the building its unique character.

A masterpiece in the making

The Scheepvaarthuis was built in the early 20th century as the headquarters for six prominent Amsterdam shipping companies. Architect Joan van der Mey invited Van den Eijnde to lead the sculpture studio, where other artists—such as Hildo Krop—also contributed to the project. The result? A building that impresses not only through its architecture, but also through its innovative and expressive sculptural art.

It was here that Van den Eijnde developed his signature blocky style, in which figures are depicted with strength and stylized elegance. This approach would later have a major influence on Dutch stone sculpture. His work on the Scheepvaarthuis marked a high point in his career and left a lasting impression on the art world.

A timeless tribute

Today, we cherish these historical and artistic elements at Grand Hotel Amrâth Amsterdam. It is our mission to not only preserve the unique heritage of the Scheepvaarthuis, but also to share it with our guests. Whether you’re visiting for an overnight stay, a conference, or simply to admire the building, you’ll experience a rich history that comes to life in every detail.
